Alternative Fashion

Alternative style (or fashion) is a term used to describe any style that stands apart from mainstream fashion. I will use this term to describe many clothing styles, such as: emo, scene, goth, industrial, etc.

Rockabilly/Retro

Rockabilly is an early style of rock 'n' roll from the 1950s. It combines rock 'n' roll and bluegrass; hence, the name is combining "rock 'n' roll" and "hillbilly."
Rockabilly style today is a lot different. Rockabillies are most often very tattooed, and have brightly colored hair. Bandanas are quite popular as well. Even a newer music genre has been created for modern rockabillies: psychobilly. It is basically a mixture of rockabilly and punk, creating the perfect mix for today's rockabilly audience.

Punk

Punk fashion came in the 70s and 80s music scene. (Punk, of course) They wanted to reject the mainstream culture, and that fueled the elaborate looks and music. The look was unkempt, rather than the elaborate disco look. Dirty, raggedy, ripped clothes are great. Spikes, chains, safety pins, fishnet, and eyeliner are positive musts. Shoes are usually combat boots, creepers, Converse, or Doc Martens. Hair is spiky, shaved, messy.. just anything crazy. Oh, and mohawks. Mohawks are the defining characteristic of punk.
Punks would generally listen to anything that rejects the system and yells, but here are some good punk bands: The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Green Day, The Offspring, The Exploited, GBH, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, New York Dolls, The Dictators, The Damned, The Minutemen, Bad Brains

Emo

Emo is a pretty recent style. It's very popular in today's alternative society, especially among the younger ones. Emo style is most commonly associated with skinny jeans (commonly neon), band tee shirts, studded belts and bracelets, and horn-rimmed glasses. Hairstyles are also important to the emo style. Hair is usually very thin and straightened. Long, side swept bangs that often cover the eyes. Also colors. Neon hair colors are common.

Sadly, emo fashion is stereotyped and misjudged a lot, which angers me quite a lot. Misconceptions of emo include: being emotional or angst-ridden, depression, self-harm, suicide, and also is confused with goth(and this makes me EXTREMELY angry because, being a goth myself, emo is nothing like it!!)

Popular emo bands include: Mayday Parade, All Time Low, Panic! At The Disco, and My Chemical Romance.

Goth

Yayyy! Goth is the best style of all (in my opinion).
The Goth Subculture is a contemporary subculture which derived in the 80s as an offshoot of post-punk. The Goth Subculture is the best because it has survived much longer than the other ones of it's time. You can often find a goth reading 19th century Gothic literature, watching a horror movie, or having a picnic in your local cemetery.
Gothic fashion is mostly black, of course. Though, a common misconception about it is that goths wear ALL black ALL THE TIME. No, sir, you are wrong. Victorian style clothing is quiet popular, and it's actually pretty hard to find a goth who really has nothing but black in their closet. Different styles of goth include: Victorian, punk goth, cybergoth, deathrock, burlesque, and industrial.
Goths are stereotyped as being depressed, suicidal, mean, Satanist, or gay. The truth is, most goths are very intelligent, nice people. Try talking to one, you'll see. I myself am goth, so trust me, I know.
Just to name a few, here are some bands goths love: Bauhaus, Clan of Xymox, The Cramps, Voltaire, The Cure, Rosetta Stone, Apoptygma Berzerk, 45 Grave, Fields of the Nephilim, Specimen, Scarlet's Remains, Joy Division.. I could go on and on.

Steampunk

In short, steampunk is Victorian science fiction. I don't really know that much about steampunk. It's basically a futuristic style with lots of quirky features, like goggles, clockwork stuff, and cool gadgets. Corsets are popular for men and women.
Steampunk inclined bands: The Clockwork Dolls, Unextraordinary Gentlemen, Proffesor Elemental, Deadly Nightshade Botanical Society, and Ghostfire.

Scene

Scene style is very similar to emo, though the difference between the two is scenes are generally more perky. Scenes today often look down on emos and/or the term "emo", as it is derogatory.

Scene kids usually have colored hair like emos, though it isn't spiked as often as emos were. Instead, side swept bangs, lots of layers, and no part.

Scene kids do get a lot of criticism from goths and metal elitists and anyone really. But, really any alternative fashion gets it's share of criticism.
Bands scene kids like include: Hollywood Undead, Brokencyde, Blood On The Dance Floor, Dot Dot Curve, I See Stars, A Day To Remember, We Came As Romans, Sleeping With Sirens, Pierce The Veil, and Falling In Reverse.
