Many people associate punk music with Green Day and blink-182.
But really, they don't even know what true punk rock is.
Punk started in the 70s I believe. It was one of the first alternative scenes that was more extreme. It also birthed the goth genre of music and style.
Here's some good punk bands, new and old:
The Sex Pistols
The Sex Pistols were one of the leading punk bands from the 70s. They birthed punk in a sense. Like their name, their music is very angsty and angry. I mostly like their song "Anarchy In The UK."
Ramones
Ramones are said to be the first punk rock band ever, and I totally believe that. Yes, there were other bands before them that dressed punk, but the Ramones are really the first true punk band. They are so good. Best punk band there is, in my opinion. Just check them out, you'll see what I mean.
The Clash
The Clash were a big definitive British punk band, along with the Sex Pistols. They have a lot of rock influences, and they really were a big influence on post-punk and goth rock.
Good songs: London Calling, Rock The Casbah, Should I Stay Or Should I Go, and I Fought The Law.
The Adicts
The Adicts are another good British punk band. They affected the look of the "droogs" in A Clockwork Orange, if you've seen that movie.
Green Day
Many do not consider Green Day to be a punk band. I think that they are punk-pop, because they are so popular and mainstream, yet they have punk sound and influences.
Also, Green Day is probably the very first alternative band I EVER liked. I know I have said before that it was actually Avenged Sevenfold, but that was the first METAL band I liked.
I found out who Green Day was when I was about 8 years old. My best friend, who a complete tomboy, liked Green Day, and one day when I went over to her house, we listened to American Idiot. Ever since I was hooked. When they played at the super bowl with U2, I was watching it intently. Was in love with Billie Joe Armstrong in 4th and 5th grade.
Green Day is important to me because they showed me that punk attitude, and inspired me to be whoever I want to be and fuck whatever anyone else thinks.
So yeah, they are great. Very mainstream, but great.
Good songs: ALL OF THEM!!!!!!!!!!
blink-182
Thought blink-182 is nowhere near as influential as Green Day to me, they still were a band I'd always hear on the radio. The thing that sucks is I'd always hear them on the radio, but never knew who it was until recently.
Good songs: I Miss You, All The Small Things, What's My Age, Again?, Feeling This.
The Offspring
The Offspring is a metal-influenced punk band that became really popular in the 90s. Never got super into them until last year. My marching band did "Come Out And Play" in last year's show, which was AMAZING. And that same summer they played live locally. Was a great show.
Rise Against
Rise Against is actually classified as hardcore, but I think their sound is punk oriented. To be honest, I don't like Rise Against at all. I just do not like their sound.
Sorry I don't know very much punk music, that's just all that I've observed.
