Death Metal

Death metal is a very extreme genre of heavy metal music. Built off of thrash metal and black metal. Bands such as Slayer, Kreator, Celtic Frost, and Venom were essential in the birthing of death metal. Became popular in the late 80s and early 90s.
Early death metal bands include: Possessed, Death, Obituary, Carcass, Deicide, and Morbid Angel.

Death 'n' Roll

Death metal bands that include rock 'n' roll elements to their sound.
Popular bands include: Entombed, Six Feet Under, Gorefest, Deuteronomium


Melodic death metal

Combines elements from new wave British heavy metal and death metal, of course. Became popular during the mid-90s, mostly in England and Scandinavia. The Swedish death metal scene made it more popular.
Popular bands include: At The Gates, Carcass, Dark Tranquility, and In Flames


Technical death metal

Characterized by fast, complex guitar and drums. Vocals commonly have the guttural sound.
Popular bands include: Death, Pestilence, Atheist, Nocturnus, Cynic, Origin, and Cephalic Carnage.
