Black Metal

Black metal is a very extreme genre of heavy metal. Many 80s thrash metal bands helped in the creation of this subgenre. Also name "Satanic metal" because the theme for the music tends to be anti-Christian. The bands have somehow been associated with church burnings, murder, and neo-Nazism. Therefore, don't do this at home kids, you're parents will not approve of it.
Popular bands include: Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal, and Emperor.

Derivatives of Black Metal

Symphonic black metal

Basically black metal with symphonic and orchestral elements included. The music tends to be a bit less "raw", without the screaming voices, and even with opera.
Popular bands include: Celtic Frost, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, and Emperor.

Viking metal

Characterized by it's chaotic sound, slow tempo, and lyric themes of Norse mythology, Norse paganism, and the Viking age. Can also be classified as folk metal. Typically, all the bands claim they have Viking ancestry.
Popular bands include: Bathory, Graveland, Enslaved, Einherjer, and Mortiis.
