Alternative Metal

Alternative metal is a subgenre which was quite popular during the 90s. It blends heavy metal and alternative into one awesome mix of hardcoreness. Popular alternative metal bands include: Alice In Chains, Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Faith No More, Helmet, Life of Agony, Soundgarden, System of a Down, and Tool.

Derivatives of Alternative Metal

Funk metal

Fusion of heavy metal and funk. This genre strongly influenced the nu-metal genre.
Popular bands include: Living Colour, Infectious Grooves, Mordred, Primus, and Rage Against The Machine.

Nu-metal

Basically a mix of tons of metal genres. Alternative metal, grunge, industrial, funk, and hip hop. Some bands use seven string guitars downtuned to increase heaviness, and also five and six stringed bass guitars. Turntables, sequencers, and samplers are quite popularly used. Singing styles range from singing, rapping, screaming, and growling. It's also one of my personal favorite genres of metal.
Popular bands include: Korn, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Kittie, Disturbed, Otep, and Coal Chamber.

Rap metal

Is basically metal fronted by a rapper. Often mislabeled as rapcore or nu metal, since turntables and samplers are commonly used. Anthrax helped sufficiently in birthing this genre.
Popular bands include: Crazy Town, Clawfinger, Limp Bizkit, Stuck Mojo, Rage Against The Machine, and (I think) Hollywood Undead.
